Swimming is not a bad idea... I should take a swimming class, at the beach I felt like I was splashing a lot, but not getting anywhere.

Thomas, I stabbed him and put a shoulder into him. He was bigger than me. We have a saying around here, if you can beat em, run! or don't miss :)

That's how I've started viewing stick fighting. I don't fight to stay in shape; I stay in shape to fight (and, well, keep my job). If you don't do anything but fight to stay in shape you are at a much higher risk of injury.
I agree with this. That said, time needs to be given to our craft of war. When I help a fighter make a new stick and ask him if it feels ok, he/she should be able to articulate if it does or does not. If I say throw some shots to feel it out, he/she should throw viablible shots and not do hand twirls. I think we are lazy, and we are forgetting the basic keninetics. I know just this past week I got hit in the arm pit. How does one get hit in the arm pit? I thought I had hand control, but I forgot my opponent could bend at the waist and be lower than me. I'm too good to forget that.

To perfect our craft we need to renew focus on the meta of our sport. We need to explore the framework of movement, and in particular, the modes of physical thinking. We have some things in stick fighting that exist no where else, and so we should develope exercises to hone those muscles and skill. I always tell fighters to show me their dance, because there is more to fighting than just swinging a stick. Maybe the future of our practices should be more dancing and less stick swinging.

On the modes of phycial thinking:

Of note, picture different examples. Instead of letters, picture spearmen or shieldmen, both attacking and defending.

Anywho, just wanted to argue for more practice.

Good Day, Jeff.

I agree with that statement also. Have been doing so for decades. I had a high school hockey coach that made us run cross country and play soccer to stay in shape during the off season. Then we did as much weight training as we had ice time.

Sincerely
